Quick answer
If an outlet is not working, look for a tripped GFCI outlet in a nearby kitchen, bath, garage or outdoor spot and press reset. Then check the breaker. If that does not fix it, or the outlet is warm, scorched or loose, stop using it and have it checked. Ocala Electrician connects you with a local electrician who tests the circuit and fixes the real cause.
Outlet Not Working? Start Here
Most dead outlets come down to one of these:
- A tripped GFCI upstream. One GFCI can protect several outlets after it. A tripped one in the garage can kill an outlet on the porch.
- A tripped breaker. Look for a breaker that sits in the middle or off.
- A switched outlet. Some living room outlets are controlled by a wall switch.
- A loose connection. Older outlets often used push in "back stab" connections. They can loosen with time and heat.
- A worn out outlet. If plugs fall out, the contacts are worn.
When a GFCI Outlet Will Not Reset
A GFCI outlet not working usually means one of three things. It has no power coming in, it has tripped because of a real ground fault, or the device itself has failed. GFCIs do wear out, and moisture speeds that up. Outdoor GFCIs on Ocala lanais, pool decks and garages take on humidity and rain, which is why they fail more often here than ones inside.
If a GFCI trips every time it rains, the problem is often a wet outdoor outlet or fixture down the line. An in use cover, sometimes called a bubble cover, keeps the outlet dry even with a cord plugged in.
Where GFCI Protection Is Required
The National Electrical Code calls for GFCI protection in places where water and power meet. In homes that includes bathrooms, kitchens near the counters, garages, outdoors, laundry areas, crawl spaces, unfinished basements and near sinks. The 2020 code widened the list, including some 240 volt outlets in those areas. Older Ocala homes may not have GFCIs everywhere a newer home would, and adding them is one of the cheapest safety upgrades you can make.
Warning Signs That Need Attention
- An outlet or cover plate that feels warm.
- Brown or black marks around the slots.
- A burning smell.
- Sparks or crackling when you plug in.
- Two prong outlets with no ground.
- Outlets that are loose in the wall.
The CPSC lists warm plates and burning smells near outlets as warning signs in homes with aluminum wiring. If your home was built or rewired between 1965 and the mid 1970s, mention it when you ask for help.
How Your Electrician Fixes It
- Trace the circuit
Your electrician finds which breaker and which GFCI feed the dead outlet, then tests for power at each point.
- Find the cause
They look for loose or burned connections, failed devices and wet boxes. If a GFCI trips, they look for the fault instead of just swapping the device.
- Repair or replace
Worn or burned outlets are replaced, connections are moved from back stab holes to screw terminals, and outdoor boxes get proper covers.
- Test
Each outlet is checked for correct wiring and ground, and each GFCI is tested to make sure it trips.
Electrical Outlet Installation
Need more outlets? Outlet installation is one of the most common jobs on any list. People want outlets on the lanai for fans and lights, in the garage for a freezer or tools, on kitchen islands, and USB outlets by the bed. A dedicated circuit makes sense for freezers, window units and shop tools. Your electrician will check whether the circuit can handle the new load before adding to it.
Outlet Questions
Why does my GFCI trip when it rains?
Water is getting into an outlet, fixture or cord somewhere on that circuit. Check outdoor outlets and covers, then have the circuit tested if it keeps happening.
Can I replace a two prong outlet with a three prong one?
Only if there is a ground, or if the outlet is GFCI protected and labeled "No Equipment Ground." Your electrician can tell you which option fits.
How long do GFCI outlets last?
There is no fixed age. Press the test button monthly. If it will not trip or will not reset, replace it.
Are USB outlets safe?
Yes, when they are listed and installed right. They are a handy upgrade by beds, desks and kitchen counters.
Should a warm outlet worry me?
Yes. Stop using it and have it checked. Heat means a loose connection or a worn device.
