Knob and Tube Wiring and House Rewiring in Ocala, FL

Old wiring is not always bad wiring. But a hundred year old system in a Florida attic, or a 1970s home with aluminum branch circuits, deserves an honest look from someone who has seen a lot of both.

Old knob and tube wiring on ceramic insulators in an attic beside new copper cable

Quick answer

Knob and tube wiring has no ground, its insulation gets brittle with age and heat, and it was never meant to be buried in insulation. Aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s can overheat at its connections. Neither always means a full rewire. Ocala Electrician connects you with a local electrician who tests what you have, tells you what really needs work and gives you a price for each option.

What Is in Your Walls?

Ocala homes span more than a century. The Ocala Historic District grew between 1880 and 1930, and homes from that time may still have knob and tube runs somewhere. Homes from the 1940s to the 1960s often have cloth covered cable with no ground. Some homes from the late 1960s and 1970s have aluminum branch circuits. Most homes built after that have copper plastic sheathed cable.

House wiring also gets changed over the years. A home can have three generations of wire in it, with splices between them hidden in the attic.

Knob and Tube Wiring: The Real Concerns

Knob and tube uses single wires run on ceramic knobs and through ceramic tubes, with air around them to shed heat. The problems are mostly about age and what has been done to it since.

  • No ground. Three prong outlets on these circuits are not grounded unless someone added protection.
  • Brittle insulation. Rubber and cloth insulation cracks after decades of heat, and Florida attics get very hot.
  • Buried in insulation. Blown in insulation around the wires traps heat they were designed to shed.
  • Bad add ons. Most trouble comes from later splices made without boxes, or from circuits overloaded with modern loads.
  • Insurance. Many insurers ask about knob and tube, and some will not write a policy until it is removed.

Aluminum Wiring in Ocala Homes

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says homes built before 1965 are unlikely to have aluminum branch wiring, but homes built or rewired between 1965 and the mid 1970s may. In its aluminum wiring guide, the CPSC explains that the danger is at the connections, which can loosen and overheat over time. Plenty of homes in Ocala neighborhoods that took off in that era fit the window.

The CPSC lists three fixes it accepts: rewiring with copper, attaching copper pigtails to every aluminum connection with a COPALUM crimp connector, or using AlumiConn connectors where COPALUM is not available. It does not treat plain twist on connectors as a permanent fix.

Signs Your House Wiring Needs Help

  • Warm switch or outlet plates.
  • A burning smell near an outlet or switch.
  • Lights that flicker in several rooms.
  • Two prong outlets throughout the house.
  • Fuses, or a panel with cloth covered wire coming in.
  • Scorch marks on outlets or switches.
  • Breakers that trip often.
  • Chewed cable in the attic. Rats and squirrels love to nest above Ocala ceilings.

Whole House Rewire or Targeted Repair?

A whole house rewire replaces every branch circuit with new copper cable. It solves the problem for good but is a bigger job, with holes in walls and ceilings that need patching. In many homes, a targeted plan makes more sense: replace the worst circuits, fix the attic splices, repair aluminum connections the CPSC way and add GFCI and AFCI protection.

How Rewiring a House Is Done

  1. Survey

Your electrician opens outlets, switches and the panel, checks the attic and maps what wire types are where.

  2. Testing

Circuits are tested for insulation breakdown, loose connections and overloads.

  3. Options and price

You get a plan, either full or phased, with a price for each part.

  4. Permit and work

A permit is pulled. New cable is fished through walls where possible to limit patching. Old wire is disconnected or removed.

  5. Inspection and testing

The inspector checks the rough work and the final. Every circuit is tested and labeled.

Rewire House Cost

The price depends on the size of the house, how easy the attic and walls are to reach, how much patching is needed and whether the panel also needs replacing. Your electrician can price a full rewire and a phased plan side by side so you can choose.

House Rewiring Questions

Is knob and tube wiring illegal?

Existing knob and tube is not automatically against code. The concern is its age, its lack of a ground, and changes made to it since. Insurers may set their own rules.

Can I get insurance with knob and tube?

It depends on the insurer. Ask yours what they require, then share it with your electrician.

How long does a rewire take?

It depends on the house. Small homes with good attic access go faster than two story homes or homes with plaster walls.

Can I live in the house during a rewire?

Usually yes. Most rewiring is done room by room so you keep power to most of the house.

Is aluminum wiring dangerous?

The CPSC says aluminum branch wiring connections can overheat. The fix is to repair the connections with approved methods or rewire with copper.
